CANADIAN MEN’S AND WOMEN’S TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS SET TO BEGIN

OTTAWA, ON (February 11, 2020) – Canada’s top players headline their respective Provincial/Territorial teams as the 2020 Canadian Men’s and Women’s Teams Championships are set to begin this weekend (February 14-16, 2020).  The women will converge on “La Belle Province” where they will be hosted by Squash Outaouais at Sportheque in Gatineau, Quebec.  Meanwhile, the men will head to the “Gateway to the West” as they are hosted by the Winnipeg Squash Racquets Club in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

As the 2020 edition of each event begins, reigning champions Team Alberta (women) and Team Ontario (men) will look to keep their crowns by attempting to win back to back National Team Titles.  However, standing in their way are nine other teams, eager to shine on the National stage and bring home a Canadian Championship to their Province/Territory.  In what will be one of the largest contested Teams Championships held in years – a total of 10 entries in each of the men’s and women’s events will participate.

On the women’s side, there will be no shortage of star power competing with many of Canada’s finest players on the PSA World Tour but also some of the best Juniors the country has to offer.  The reigning Champions from Alberta will feature World #39 Danielle Letourneau, the only returning player from 2019, who will lead junior star Jana Dweek (ranked #2 in Girls U17) and Sarah Hall into battle.  Meanwhile, Team Ontario’s Hollie Naughton (Canada’s top ranked player at World #29) leads maybe the most interesting team into the event with junior sensations Molly Chadwick (Girls U17) and Iman Shaheen (Girls U15), both ranked #1 in their respective age groups.  Other PSA notables include Saskatchewan’s Nikole Todd (World #64 in singles and recently became the World #1 in doubles) and British Columbia’s Nicole Bunyan (World #65).

On the men’s side, the list of players competing is a whose who of Canadian squash that features many current and former PSA players.  Team Ontario will look to defend their 2019 title with returning players Mike McCue (World #87) and Nick Sachvie (World #101) as well as Cameron Seth (World #122).  Team Quebec who is always in the title hunt at this event will again feature Shawn Delierre (World #79), David Baillargeon (World #100) and Jason Delierre.  Other notable PSA players include Manitoba’s Connor Turk (World #191) and Tristan Eysele (World #133), Saskatchewan’s Thomas King (World #194) and Alberta’s Andrew Schnell (World #174).

It will certainly be a toss up on both the men’s and women’s sides as to who will walk away with a National Teams title, but rest assured these players will shed blood, sweat and tears in the process.

“The Winnipeg Squash Racquet Club is beyond excited to be hosting the 2020 Canadian Men’s Teams Championship! Our volunteers and members have put in a lot of effort and time and can’t wait to get the weekend going! We think the players will have an amazing time in Winnipeg and competing at our Club,” said Tournament Chair Dave Glass, who will also represent Team Manitoba.  “It’s really a great honour to be able to play in this event at my home club! Every year this tournament is the highlight of my squash season. Having a chance to play against Canada’s best players is a challenge in itself, but also the friendly comradery and ability to catch up with Squash friends is the best part!  I know a few WSRC members will take pleasure in seeing our locals getting run around the court a little, but the support will be overwhelming and surely help Team Manitoba have a great finish on Sunday!”

“Squash Outaouais and la Sportheque are excited to host for the second time the Canadian Women’s Teams Championship,” said Tournament Chair Maxym Leclair.  “Spectators will be thrilled with high level squash with four players in the world top 100.  We hope that this tournament will help grow women’s squash in the National Capital Region.”
