(TORONTO, ON) – #1 seed Cameron Seth of Fergus, Ontario captured the Boys U19 title defeating #6 seed Tyler Lee of Edmonton, Alberta in an exciting 5 game final at the 2012 BDO Canadian Junior Squash Championships held April 19 – 22nd at the Centre of Excellence – National Squash Academy in Toronto. The hotly contested final between the two first year Canadian University Students (Seth – U of Waterloo and Lee – U of Alberta) had many exceptional rallies and both players demonstrated excellent sportsmanship. Seth, rallied from match point down in the fourth game to force a fifth and final game where he won 11 – 3. Both Seth and Lee are in contention for the Canadian Jr. Team heading to the World Junior Squash Championships to be held in Qatar in July.
In an all-Ontario U19 girls final #2 seed and Harvard University bound athlete Michelle Gemmell defeated #1 seed Hollie Naughton of Oakville in 4 games. Gemmell and Naughton have waged a long-standing rivalry on the court, with Gemmell capturing the National title one week after Naughton defeated Gemmell in the final of the Ontario Jr. Open at White Oaks Conference Resort & Spa. British Columbia’s, Michael Thompson captured the Boys U17 final against fellow BC teammate Sam Ejtemai 3 games to 0, while Alyssa Mehta of Toronto captured the U17 girls title defeating British Columbia’s Alexandra Toth.
This year’s edition of The BDO Canadian Junior Squash Championships featured over 225 junior players from all over Canada. The annual event concludes the junior competitive squash season. The newly created National Centre of Excellence at the National Squash Academy in Downsview Park staged its second National Championship in the past year and all the parents, coaches and players were very happy with the exceptionally well-run event.
Tyler Lee won the Alex Doucas Memorial Trophy for Sportsmanship, while Ontario captured the Canada Cup.
