Squash Canada is pleased to announce that a Canadian U23 Squash Championship will be inaugurated in 2018.  The Mayfair Club Lakeshore in Toronto, ON will play host to the first edition of the Canadian U23 Squash Championships on June 1-3, 2018.

A survey conducted by Squash Canada earlier this summer to previous national championship participants in the 17-23-year-old range showed a tremendous response to the event concept and prospective participation.  A resounding 94% of the respondents indicated that a U23 National Championship was needed in Canada and as such Squash Canada’s Board of Directors undertook a review of the viability of the event, ultimately approving its launch in 2018.

With national titles and $5,000 in prize money on the line, the Canadian U23 Squash Championships was created to provide a competitive opportunity for post U19 up to U23 athletes from all provinces and territories. The event recognizes that a competitive continuum during this stage of the Player Development Model is key to facilitating athlete high performance aspirations and maintaining a high competitive level during university and college years.  The event will be considered a pilot, with future plans and decisions subject to a post-event evaluation.

“We are very excited about this new event and the opportunity for players to be able to continue their progress at such a critical developmental and participation crossroad,” said Dan Wolfenden, Squash Canada’s Executive Director.  We are also thrilled to partner with the Mayfair Clubs for this inaugural event.  With top of the line facilities, experienced organizers and a history of running world-class events, the Mayfair Club is the ideal location for debut of this championship.  We are confident that the event will be filled with great matchups and exciting times for all.”

“After hosting successful back-to-back Canadian Squash Championships in 2016 and 2017 and already being awarded the 2018 Canadian Junior Championships, we could not be more thrilled to be selected as host for this new championship,” said Barb Cooper, Head Squash Professional at Mayfair Clubs Lakeshore.  Cooper, who will take the lead in the organization of the championship continued, “we cannot wait to get preparations underway and launch this event in the only way we know how – by creating an event where the best squash will be played on the courts and the best atmosphere will be experienced off the courts to give competing athletes a great first impression of this event.”

As further event details are confirmed, such as the schedule of events and registration, they will be posted on www.squash.ca/events.  Players younger than 19 are eligible to enter.  The championship will feature Men’s and Women’s U23 events, with B and C categories also be on offer.  Special event regulations for this new national championship can be viewed here.
