Junior Talent on Display at 2019 Canadian Junior Closed

2019-04-10

OTTAWA, ON, April 10, 2019 – Canada’s best junior players take aim at National Glory when the 2019 Canadian Junior Closed Squash Championships begins April 11-14 in Edmonton, Alberta.  The city nicknamed “ The City of Champions” will crown 10 new Canadian Champions as 250 players take to the courts at host club The Royal Glenora Club and co-host Edmonton Squash Club.

This annual event brings together many top junior players from around Canada.  The high-level competition will surely not disappoint as the players have trained countless hours for their moment to shine.  Many former champions have gone on to win Canadian Championships at the senior level, represent Canada at major international events and even compete professionally on the PSA Tour.

Maybe the most notable player to take to the courts this week will be defending Boys U19 Champion James Flynn (Ontario) who as the number one seed will be considered a heavy favourite to repeat.  Flynn had the prestigious honour of being Canada’s lone representative at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina where squash was a “showcase sport”.  But not to be outdone is number two seed Abdelrahman Dweek of Alberta who comes into the event as the reigning Boys U17 Champion and will look to lead an onslaught of worthy challengers.

On the girl’s side, Girls U19 number one seed Charlotte Orcutt enters the event as the back-to-back U17 National Champion and aims for her first U19 title.  Orcutt recently returned home from the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer with a Silver medal in the Individual Competition and a Gold medal in Team competition as she represented Ontario.  But maybe the most interesting story will come from Girls U17 number one seed Lucia Bicknell of British Columbia who looks to continue her impressive season by winning a National title to compliment her stunning Gold Medal victory at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in the Individual competition.

In the end, no matter what happens these junior athletes will leave everything they have on the courts shedding blood, sweat and tears in the process.  And for those that come away victorious they will join an illustrious group of squash players to be crowned Canadian Junior Squash Champions.

“It is a huge honor to be hosting the 2019 Sandhills Manufacturing Canadian Junior Squash Nationals here at the Royal Glenora Club,” said Head Squash Pro Pete Goodings.  “It's a tremendous achievement to win a Canadian Junior National Title and we look forward to seeing these amazing and talented athletes’ do battle over the next four days.  We can't wait to see who gets crowned the 2019 National Champions in their age groups!”
