Building a Better Athlete – Coaching Development Seminar
The Club at White Oaks 253 Taylor Road, Niagara on the Lake March 20, 21, and 22, 2009 Presenter: Terry Orlick Terry Orlick is a world-renowned leader in applied sport psychology, high performance focus coaching and performance excellence. A former gymnastics champion and coach, Orlick has served as a high performance focus coach for 35 years to many thousands of National Team Athletes, Olympic and professional athletes in more than 30 different sports. He has worked directly with Canadian coaches and athletes competing 8 summer and 8 Winter Olympic Games and many World Championship Events. Former president of the International Society for Mental Training and Excellence, Orlick has authored more than 20 books, including In Pursuit of Excellence (2008),Embracing Your Potential (1998) and Psyching for Sport (1986). He has created innovative programs and books for children and youth including Positive Living Skills for Children, Youth and Adults (2009) Cooperative Games and Sports(2006), Nice on My Feelings (1997) and Feeling Great: Teaching Children to Excel at Living (2001). Presenter: Natalie Grainger Natalie Grainger has been ranked as high as No. 1 (in June 2003) in a career highlighted by finalround appearances in the 2002 World Championships in Quatar (via a fifth-set tiebreaker semifinal win over Carol Owens) and the 2004 British Open as well as by the top-10 rankings she has earned seven times during the past decade. Presenter: Dr. Jim McAuliffe Dr. Jim McAuliffe is the Squash Canada LTAD Project Coordinator who is currently writing the LTAD document for Squash Canada. He has recently moved to North Bay Ontario to start a new Physical and Health Education Program at Nipissing University. Presenter: Martin Heath Currently head coach, University of Rochester. Heath has touched the sport on many levels – player, coach, writer, and commentator. He joined the Professional Squash Association world circuit in 1993. He spent six consecutive years in the World's top 10 ranking, reaching a high of #4. He was a six-time Scottish champion. In 2000, Heath became a professional commentator and presenter for various televised squash media outlets, including ESPN, TSN, CBC, BBC, SKY, and The Tennis Channel. He is a monthly columnist for Squash magazine, the largest publication of its type in North America. He has coached privately for numerous years and helped many individuals achieve their college placements. Heath graduated from the University of Glasgow with a BSc in Physiology and Sports Science. Presenter: Louise Blais - (Nutrition for Optimal Sports Performance) This seminar will present the latest research on sports nutrition and package it in a practical, easy to follow format to allow any athlete to improve their game through nutrition. Training is important, but eating properly is absolutely essential for optimal performance. Good nutrition will not make an average athlete elite, but poor nutrition can definitely make an elite athlete average. Presenter: David Phillips David joined Ontario Racquet Club after spending the past 4 years pursuing a PhD in Education at University of Toronto. For the past 3 years, he has been involved in both the development and implementation of the coaching certification program. Previously, David worked in player development and has assisted over 30 former students attain athletic and academic scholarships throughout the U.S. David holds a level 3 certification in squash, a level 4 in tennis, is a certified Tennis Canada consultant and TDC leader and is a Coaching Association of Canada Master Learning Facilitator and was recently named TPA Course Facilitator of the Year and is the recipient of the Coaching Association of Ontario's Excellence Award for High Performance Coaching. He has coached Tennis Ontario's Canada Games team as well as coached the Toronto & District Squash Team in the 1993 and 1995 Ontario Winter Games.
